LTIFR - Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate

LTIFR (Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate) is a lagging safety indicator that measures how often work-related injuries result in time away from work. It is typically calculated as the number of lost-time injuries in a period, multiplied by 1,000,000 (or another agreed exposure base), then divided by the total hours worked in that same period.

Organisations use LTIFR to:

  • Track serious injury trends over time across sites, contractors, or business units.
  • Benchmark performance against industry peers and internal targets.
  • Support board, regulator, and client reporting where lost-time injuries are a required KPI.

Because LTIFR only counts injuries that cause lost time, it should sit alongside complementary measures such as TRIFR, near-miss reporting, and leading indicators. Relying on LTIFR alone can understate risk if teams under-report incidents or push injured workers to return before they are ready.

In high-risk industries, LTIFR is most useful when paired with strong incident classification, investigation quality, and corrective action follow-through—so the number reflects real harm reduction, not just how injuries are labelled.
