UK HSE and RIO Announce Collaborative Robotics Safety Guidance
The UK Health and Safety Executive and Regulatory Innovation Office are developing joint industry guidance for the safe workplace integration of robotics.

Guidance Development
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Regulatory Innovation Office (RIO) have announced a collaboration to develop the UK’s first joint industry guidance for collaborative robotics in the workplace.
Co-designed with industry stakeholders, including Automate UK and the Manufacturing Technology Centre, the initiative aims to address business hesitation regarding health and safety compliance when integrating advanced robotic systems.
Scope and Implementation
According to the HSE, the guidance will cover risk assessment, system integration, operational procedures, and training requirements for collaborative robots, or "cobots." The first phase is scheduled for delivery in the summer of 2026 to provide immediate regulatory clarity.
Andrew Curran CBE, Director of Science and Chief Scientific Adviser at the HSE, stated that clear guidance and expert advice are intended to give employers the confidence to innovate safely, providing a platform for new technologies to enhance productivity and stimulate economic development.
