SafeWork NSW Launches Compliance Program for Overhead and Underground Services

Compliance Program Overview

SafeWork NSW inspectors are visiting high-risk workplaces across the state to ensure construction and utilities businesses are working safely near live electrical, gas, water, and telecommunications assets.

According to the regulator, working near these services with equipment such as excavators, elevated work platforms, and front-end loaders presents significant risks, including electrocution, burns, explosions, and major service outages.

Enforcement and Penalties

Inspectors will verify that duty holders identify hazards, implement risk controls, and establish clear exclusion zones and safe distances. SafeWork NSW stated that non-compliant businesses may face enforcement action, including improvement, prohibition, and penalty notices.

Commissioner's Statement

SafeWork Commissioner Janet Schorer stated:

"These site visits aim to drive compliance, strengthen supervision and ensure every person on site understands the critical steps needed to work safely around essential infrastructure. By lifting awareness and enforcing best practice, SafeWork NSW can help to prevent life-changing injuries and help create safer worksites. Businesses and duty holders must take a ‘know what’s above and below before you start work’ approach when working with or around overhead and underground services."
