Safe Work Australia to Present on Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace

The Safety Institute of Australia recently called for a wider conversation amongst the industry on the issue of harassment, bullying and abuse in the workplace (see related article). Dr Kelly Johnstone, Chair of the Institute’s think tank the SIA College of Fellows, called on Safe Work Australia to develop a code of practice.

In early May, Safe Work Australia will consider the draft National Guidance – Work-related psychological health and safety: A systematic approach to meeting your duties. This guide will provide clear national guidance for employers on prevention, early intervention and how to support effective recovery from work-related psychological injuries.

David Clarke, SIA CEO welcomed the work as an important contribution to the national discussion. “Psychological health and safety is justifiably in the spotlight. There is widespread concern and confusion about what Australian employers can and should be doing, and what compliance and best practice looks like. Industry and health and safety professionals urgently need good quality advice on this topic. It’s important we work to develop a model code of practice, especially around the issues of bullying, harassment and abuse, but, this is a positive step.”
