The NHVR encourages the livestock industry to use the 2026 Master Code to manage safety risks and Chain of Responsibility duties in transport operations.

The following is an abridgement of an article originally published by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.
The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has reminded the livestock industry to utilize the newly released 2026 Master Code, which is designed to assist operators and supply-chain participants in managing and reducing safety risks in daily operations.
NHVR Acting Director of Policy Implementation Susannah McGirr stated that the Master Code provides essential information for Chain of Responsibility (CoR) parties, including businesses that prepare livestock for transport and those receiving shipments.
"If you send or receive livestock using heavy vehicles, you are likely a party in the CoR, meaning you have a duty under the Heavy Vehicle National Law to ensure safety," Ms McGirr said.
According to the NHVR, the updated code outlines hazards, risks, and controls specific to livestock transport. It also offers guidance for off-road parties to assist in transport planning by providing information regarding safe access routes and vehicle movements on premises.
Ms McGirr indicated that the NHVR will soon offer additional industry engagement options, including online webinars, to provide further support and clarify the code's practical recommendations.
The NHVR stated that feedback or requests for further resources can be directed to codes@nhvr.gov.au.
