Understanding Job Safety Analysis

This module explains the purpose and process of conducting a Job Safety Analysis (JSA)—a collaborative risk assessment created by the work group to identify job steps, hazards, risks, and control measures. It outlines how to break down tasks, identify hazards using various sensory and consultative methods, assess risk using a matrix, and implement effective controls using the hierarchy of controls. It also covers the importance of reviewing and signing onto the JSA as a legal document.

By the end of this module, you will be able to understand:

• What a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) is and why it is important
• The four key stages of a JSA
• How to write a clear and effective JSA
• The key components of a JSA,
• How to identify and assess workplace hazards
• How to assign risk scores using a risk matrix
• The hierarchy of controls and how to apply them
• The importance of signing onto a JSA and when reviews are required
• How to monitor and review a JSA to keep it relevant and effective

• Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Cth) – Requires employers and workers to identify hazards and manage risks.
• WHS Regulations 2011 (Cth) – Outlines requirements for risk assessment and control implementation.
• Model Code of Practice: How to Manage Work Health and Safety Risks
• Model Code of Practice: Construction Work – Includes guidance on high-risk construction activities and when SWMS or JSAs are required.
