Understanding Hot Works Awareness
This module outlines the hazards and control measures associated with hot works activities such as welding, grinding, and cutting. It explains the risks of fire, explosion, burns, arc flash, and exposure to hazardous fumes. Learners are guided through risk assessments, the use of permits, equipment checks, fire prevention strategies, and the importance of competent operation. The module reinforces safe work practices to minimise the risk of incidents.
By the end of this module, you will be able to understand:
- What is hot work?
- Associated hazards and risks
- Recommended controls
Relevant Australian Legislation:
- Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Cth)
- WHS Regulations 2011 (Cth) – Including duties to manage risks associated with hazardous work, fire, and electrical equipment.
- Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Plant in the Workplace
- Relevant state-based fire safety and hot work permitting guidelines (e.g. DMIRS in WA – “Hot work – fire safety essentials”)
