Understanding Hazardous Manual Tasks
This module explains what Hazardous Manual Tasks (HMTs) are, how they can lead to Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs), and how to manage and minimise the associated risks. It highlights the importance of identifying physical and repetitive work that could cause harm, outlines responsibilities of both employers and employees, and provides practical steps for risk identification and control.
By the end of the module, learners will be able to learn about:
- Hazardous manual tasks.
- Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD).
- What causes MSD?
- Ways to minimise the risk of MSD.
Relevant Australian Legislation:
- Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Cth) and WHS Regulations – Require employers to manage risks associated with hazardous manual tasks and ensure workers are not exposed to health and safety risks.
- Model Code of Practice: Hazardous Manual Tasks (Safe Work Australia) – Provides guidance on identifying, assessing, and controlling risks related to HMTs.
